Also known as Devbhoomi or Land of the Gods, Uttarakhand is home to numerous temples that welcome devotees all year round. Among the myriad religious institutions and circles attended by devotees in Uttarakhand, the Char Dham Yatra is one of the most prominent. This yatra or pilgrimage is a tour around his four sacred sites in the Himalayas: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. In Hindi ‘char’ means 4 and ‘dham’ means religious goal.
The alpine sanctuary is closed for about six months each year, opening in the summer (April or May) and closing at the onset of winter (October or November). It is believed that the Char Dham Yatra should be completed clockwise. Thus, the pilgrimage begins at Yamunotri, continues to Gangotri, Kedarnath, and finally ends at Badrinath. Trips can be made by car or by plane (helicopter service is available). Some devotees perform Dodam Yatra or make pilgrimages to his two shrines at Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Located in a narrow gorge near the headwaters of the Yamuna River (her second most sacred river in India after the Ganges) in the Uttarkashi District, the Yamunotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The Uttarkashi district is also home to Gangotri, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the holiest of all rivers in India. Rudraprayag district has her Kedarnath dedicated to Lord Shiva. Badrinath, home to the holy Badrinarayan Temple, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Char Dham Yatra is as energetic as it is sacred, yet soul-satisfying!
